  • The mishap was said to have happened r 10pm on Sunday night at the Okpara station in the Ethiope East LGA of Delta state

Train operations on the Warri-Itakpe rail line have been halted after a “minor derailment”, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said on Monday.

The suspension of train services was contained in a statement on Monday by Yakub Mahmood, NRC’s deputy director of public relations.

The mishap was said to have happened 10pm on Sunday night at the Okpara station in the Ethiope East LGA of Delta state, leaving passengers stranded overnight.

Mahmood, however, said operations will resume on Monday afternoon as engineers have been mobilised to ensure the track is restored.

“The management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) hereby informs the general public, especially our valued passengers that ply the Warri-Itakpe route, that following the minor derailment yesterday at the Okpara station, the service will resume shortly as our team of Engineers are at the site of the accident to ensure the track is restored anytime soon,” the statement reads.

“However Itakpe-Warri (ujewu) trains will resume as scheduled in the afternoon today.”

In July, NRC suspended train operations along the same route due to a derailment at Abraka railway station.

The train was travelling from Itakpe in Kogi to Ujevwu in Delta when the incident occurred at about 7.15pm
