Human rights activist Dele Farotimi has expressed deep gratitude to Nigerians for their overwhelming support during his detention over defamation allegations.

Farotimi, known for advocating justice, acknowledged the unity displayed by Nigerians, regardless of ethnic or religious differences, while he faced his ordeal.

The Ekiti State Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti had remanded him for 21 days. This followed accusations of “criminal defamation” against Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola, in his book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

After spending over three weeks in custody, Farotimi secured his release on December 24. He fulfilled stringent bail terms, which included a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one a property owner), surrendering his passport, and agreeing to avoid media interviews.

In a widely shared interview after his release, Farotimi reflected on the solidarity shown by Nigerians. He spoke emotionally about how their support transcended tribal and religious divides.

“We lost our humanity by becoming divided as Nigerians, but you proved otherwise,” he said. “You did not see me as a Christian or by my ethnicity; you simply spoke for me.

Because of your voices, Nigeria could not silence me. In unity, we found strength, and together, we overcame.”

His words, filled with emotion, highlighted the power of collective action and the strength of a united Nigeria.
