Tinubu mourns Jimmy Carter, says he was a beacon of service to humanity and friend of Nigeria

The Nigerian president expressed hope that his legacy will continue to inspire Americans and leaders worldwide.

  • Tinubu lauded Carter’s significant contribution particularly his efforts in eradicating Guinea worm disease and river blindness in Nigeria.

The Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Jimmy Carter, the former US president who passed away.

The Democrat, who led the US from 1977 to 1981, died on Sunday at 100 “peacefully” in Plains, “surrounded by his family.”

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s special adviser, described Carter as “a true friend of Nigeria” in a statement on Monday.

Onanuga also noted that Carter was “a beacon of service to humanity” who showed global leaders the impact of dedication beyond public office.

“As a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and global statesman, President Carter devoted his post-presidential life to peace, democracy, and disease eradication. His commitment has left a lasting mark,” the statement reads.

“President Carter demonstrated how to stay relevant after office. He tackled global challenges, exemplifying grace and respect for humanity.

“Tinubu fondly recalls Carter as a trustworthy friend to Nigeria.”

The Nigerian president praised Carter’s achievements in combating Guinea worm disease and river blindness, improving many lives.

“President Tinubu remembers Carter’s historic 1978 visit to Nigeria, a pivotal moment in US foreign policy,” he said.

This visit laid the groundwork for US-Africa relations, with Nigeria at the forefront.

Tinubu added that Carter’s legacy will inspire global leaders to embody decency, character, and humanity.
