  • Traditional rulers from Southern Nigeria urged the federal government to urgently address food insecurity and economic challenges highlighted by recent stampedes
  • The monarchs expressed sorrow over losing lives during food distribution incidents and called for improved safety measures and unity

Traditional rulers from Southern Nigeria have urged the federal government to take urgent action to address the country’s growing food insecurity and economic challenges.

Following recent stampedes during the distribution of food palliatives in parts of the nation, the monarchs made this call, which they said exposed the desperation caused by economic hardship.

In a statement signed by the Publicity Secretary of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, His Eminence Dr. Eberechukwu Oji, the monarch of Aro Kingdom, the rulers expressed sorrow over the loss of lives during the stampedes in Abuja, Anambra, and Oyo states.

The royal fathers condoled with the victims’ families and urged governments, event organizers, and security agencies to implement better safety measures to prevent such incidents from occurring again.

The monarchs also emphasized the importance of unity among Nigerians, regardless of ethnic or regional differences.

“As we begin this New Year, let us renew our commitment to fostering unity, ensuring safety, and building a future where tragedies like these become a thing of the past.

With determination and collaboration, we can turn our hopes into realities,” the statement read.

Despite the current challenges, the monarchs expressed optimism, predicting a brighter future for Nigeria in 2025.
