  • Tambuwal dismissed the wave of defections to the APC in the Northwest as driven by “stomach infrastructure,” or self-interest, rather than public service

  • Tambuwal asserted that conscientious politicians wouldn’t join the APC due to the current economic hardship and the Tinubu administration’s poor performance

Former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has dismissed the recent wave of defections in the North-West, calling them self-serving rather than people-focused.

Speaking in Kaduna after the first Zonal Executive Council Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northwest, Tambuwal criticized politicians who switch allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He argued that their motives are driven by personal benefits rather than public service.

“People defect for various reasons, but I see that most defections are based on self-interest, what I call ‘stomach infrastructure,’” he said.

He further stated that any politician with a conscience would not join the APC, given the current economic hardship and the Tinubu administration’s poor performance.

Tambuwal accused the APC-led government of lacking focus, compassion, and direction. He urged the opposition to unite and strategize ahead of the 2027 elections to offer Nigerians an alternative.

“There is nothing appealing about the APC beyond personal gain. Those of us committed to this country and public service must work together to ensure we remove this administration by 2027,” he added.

The PDP Northwest leadership reaffirmed its determination to reclaim power in 2027, emphasizing the need for unity and strategic planning.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, read by PDP Northwest Chairman Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, highlighted the party’s commitment to national leadership.

“The PDP in the Northwest must take its rightful place in the country by offering quality leadership. All internal disputes at the national level must be resolved quickly because Nigerians are looking to us for leadership,” the communiqué stated.

Despite setbacks from the 2023 elections, the PDP emphasized its strong grassroots support and a growing national shift in its favor. The party stressed that unity is key to securing victory in 2027.

“We call for unity among members to resolve our challenges and ensure victory in 2027. Everyone must play their part to reclaim leadership at both state and national levels,” the communiqué added.

The high-profile meeting brought together top PDP figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, Jigawa PDP governorship candidate Mustapha Sule Lamido, Senator Lado Dan Marke, Hon. Isa Ashiru Kudan, Hon. Ango Abdullahi, and the PDP National Youth Leader.
