  • A Federal High Court in Abuja halted PDP’s North East zonal committee elections due to an ongoing legal case

  • The court ordered parties to maintain the status quo until further hearing on February 25, 2025

A Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from electing its zonal committee members and national ex-officio for the North East, scheduled for Saturday.

The election was halted due to a suit numbered FHC/ABJCS/298/2025. Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu issued the order in response to a case filed by Dr. Nicholas E. Msheliza and two others against the PDP and several party officials, including its national chairperson, financial secretary, organizing secretary, national vice chairman, state chairman, and the national working committee.

Justice Egwuatu directed the respondents to explain why the application should not be granted. He further ruled that the respondents must not take any action that could undermine the case’s subject matter.

Additionally, both parties were ordered to maintain the status quo as of February 21, 2025, until the respondents provide their defense.

According to a court order signed by registrar Michael Akpiri and obtained on Friday, the applicants’ counsel, Lucky Agbonghese, sought an interim injunction against the zonal working committee members and national ex-officio for the North East.

The request aimed to prevent them from proceeding with the February 22, 2025 election.

The applicants also sought permission to serve the defendants with the originating summons, motion on notice, and other related documents at the PDP National Headquarters in Wadata Plaza, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

The court scheduled the case for hearing on February 25, 2025.
