WAEC Subject Combinations for Political Science

If you’re thinking of studying Political Science, you’ll need to meet certain requirements set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria. To be eligible for entry into any university in Nigeria, you must have at least five subjects passed at credit level on the WAEC/NECO examinations.

The WAEC subject combinations for Political Science are as follows:

For Political Science, you will also need Mathematics and any three of the following:

  • Government
  • History
  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • And three (3) relevant subjects

Five (5) O’level (WAEC or NECO) credit passes in Government or History, English Language A pass in Mathematics is required.

It is important to keep in mind that individual universities may require additional or specific subject combinations other than those listed here. Be sure to check with your chosen university before taking the exams to ensure that you meet their requirements.

Jamb Subject Combinations for Political Science

For JAMB, those taking Political Science will have these four compulsory subjects: English Language, Government or History, and two other Arts or Social Science courses. It’s important to note that over half of your UTME score comes from these four compulsory subjects, so do your best on them!

  • English Language
  • Government or History
  • Plus two other Social Science/Arts subjects.

A minimum of 180 in the UTME score is required for admission into most Nigerian universities offering political science courses. However, some universities may require higher UTME scores for direct entry admission into their political science courses.

Direct entry requirements for political science

To be able to secure direct entry admission, you’ll need to have at least two (2) ‘A’ level passes, including Government or History.

Waiver for WAEC requirements for Political science for each university

To sweeten the deal, most universities also have some kind of waiver. The O’level specifications for each university’s political science program are listed below:

  • CALABAR requires two (2) Social Science subjects, including Government. Does not accept History in lieu of Government.
  • ABUAD, GOUU, OOU, DELSU, CALABAR, OAU, LASU, and EKSU require an ‘O’ level credit pass in Mathematics. EKSU also requires another Social Science subject apart from Government.
  • OAU and CALABAR require five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Government, and any two (2) from Economics, Geography, Literature in English, Christian Religious Studies/Islamic Studies, History, Civic Education, Yoruba, ICT/Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Agricultural Science.
  • The University of Ibadan requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in Government/History, English Language, and three (3) other subjects with at least an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.
  • FED-DUTSINMA requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in Government, or History/Civic Education, English Language, Mathematics, and two (2) other subjects.
  • EBSU requires an ‘O’ level credit pass in Mathematics and two (2) other subjects.
  • AAUA accepts ND in related programs at the upper Credit level.
  • BIU requires an ‘O’ level credit pass in Mathematics.
  • DELSU and UNN require an ‘O’ level credit pass in Government and any 2 other subjects with at least an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics. Does not accept History in lieu of Government.
  • JABU accepts a pass in Mathematics.
  • ABU requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Government or History, and any other two (2) Social Science or Arts Subjects.
  • KASU requires an ‘O’ level credit pass in Mathematics.
  • ABSU requires Five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Government or History and any three (3) subjects from Arts, Social Science subjects and at least an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics
  • REDEEMERS requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Government or History and two (2) other subjects.
  • KWASU accepts five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Government/History, and two (2) other Social Science subjects or one (1) Arts and one (1) Social Science subject.
  • UNILAG requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government, Economics/Geography and any one (1) of History, Literature in English and Christian Religious Studies /Islamic Studies.
  • UMYUK requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Government or History or Civic Education and ‘O’ level credit pass in any two (2) of Arts/Social Science subjects at not more than two (2) sittings.
  • KSU accepts ‘O’ level credit pass in Mathematics.
  • FED-LAFIA – Same as in Sociology.
  • BOWEN requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government and one social science subject.
  • ESUTECH requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government and two (2) social science subjects.
  • EDWIN CLARK requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Economics, Government and any other two (2) subjects with at least an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.
  • AAUA requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes, including English Language, Mathematics, Government/History, one subject from Social Science and any other subject.

These universities and others offer a great opportunity to those wishing to pursue a political science course in Nigeria.

Special Consideration for JAMB Subject Combination for Political Science

Furthermore, some universities also offer special consideration for JAMB subject combinations for Political Science.

  • DELSU requires Government, one Social Science subject and any other subject.
  • FED-DUTSINMA requires Government or History plus two (2) other Social Science/Arts subjects
  • UNILORIN – Government or History and any two (2) of Economics, Geography, Literature in English, and Mathematics
  • UI – three (3) subjects in Arts, Science, Social Sciences
  • LASU requires Mathematics
  • AAU – Government and Mathematics are mandatory
  • UNILAG requires Government and any two (2) subjects from Economics, Geography, History, Literature in English, Christian Religious Studies /Islamic Studies and Mathematics.
  • ABUAD and KWASU require Government and any two (2) Social Science or one (1) Arts subject, including Mathematics.
  • EBSU requires Government and any two (2) Social Science subjects.
  • AAUA requires Government or History, Economics and any other subject.
  • ABU requires Government or History and any two (2) of Economics, Geography, Civic Education, Islamic Studies, and Christian Religious Studies.
  • BAYERO requires Government or History and two (2) other Social Science subjects.
  • FED-LAFIA – Same as in Sociology.
  • KSU requires Government or History and two (2) Commercial, Social Science or Arts subjects.
  • OAU accepts, Government and any two (2) from Economics, Geography, Literature, Christian Religious Studies / Islamic Studies, and Mathematics.
  • BOWEN requires Mathematics, Government and any other Social Science subject.
