History of the University of Lagos
University of Lagos, fondly called UNILAG, has a long and rich history. Founded on the 22nd of October, 1962, it is one of the oldest universities in Nigeria.
UNILAG began as the University of Lagos, with the original campus in, Yaba. The first students were admitted in 1962 and began academic activities in October of that year. Over the years, the university grew rapidly in enrollment and infrastructure.
The School of Postgraduate Studies, dubbed “the Lagoon Lighthouse” due to its rapid expansion, was founded on July 22, 1981. The Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTAB) and the University of Lagos merged in 1984.
Currently, the University has a School of Postgraduate Studies, a Distance Learning Institute (DLI), and twelve faculties, which are as follows:
