I prepared for fame before it came – Sunny Neji

Veteran singer, Sunny Neji, has said even at the pinnacle of his career, he never allowed fame to get into his head.

Speaking on what he had been up to recently, the Cross River State-born artiste said, “I am currently working on a concert called Timeless that would hold between October and November.

We are trying to put up a concert that would challenge lots of artistes to match the quality. It is a way of challenging everybody to work harder. I am sure that the whole country is going to be very proud of it. I have heard a lot of people complain about the quality of songs and concerts out there but I don’t like to get involved in that argument because I believe music is subjective. So, I just pursue what I think should be. We tend to set what we consider the standard.”

Speaking on the quality of lyrics of love songs these days,Sunny Neji said, “I think music should be deeper than what it is now. Music should be entertaining, and also healing. If you observe the world today, it seems people are losing their humanity. That’s because there’s something missing and music is supposed to fill such vacuum. We need to bring good music back again. I’m not saying we’ll do it the way it used to be; we would do it better.”

On how he was able to ‘keep his head’ even at the peak of stardom, the Oruka singer stated, “People have different reasons for coming into the entertainment industry. For some people, fame just comes without them preparing for it. Some people come in with a specific purpose – they enjoy creating music. I came into the industry because I enjoyed making music; I wasn’t looking for fame. I wanted to make music to touch people. So, when the fame came, it didn’t make any difference to me.”

Imo Assembly mandates Ihedioha to probe Okorocha

Imo State on fire as the Imo State House of Assembly has mandated the new Governor, Emeka Ihedioha to probe the activities of his predecessor, Rochas Okorocha.

The House, during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Chinedu Offor, also sacked the 27 local government chairmen and their councillors.

The sacked chairmen were directed to hand over to the Directors of Administration immediately. The House also cancelled all appointments made by the former governor into Boards, Agencies and inter-ministerial Departments in the twilight of his administration, saying such appointments were hurriedly done to put landmines on the path of the new administration.

Following a motion by Mike Iheanetu (Aboh Mbaise), the lawmakers asked for a review of all land allocations, land transactions as well as inventory of all government assets, property and determine all governments assets looted and infrastructures vandalised by officials of the former administration.

The House also resolved to suspend the establishment of all tertiary institutions, as well as review all ownership structure and allocation of funds for their construction.

The Speaker at the siiting urged the governor to adhere to the resolution.

Meanwhile, the council chairmen and councillors stormed the House of Assembly, barricading the entrance to protest purported plans by the lawmakers to terminate their tenure.

The aggrieved chairmen and their supporters arrived at the Assembly complex about 9am, but were denied access to the premises by policemen.

Leader of the Okigwe legislative council Godwin Nwankwo said they got news that the lawmakers wanted to carry out the action at a plenary scheduled for yesterday, so they were there to be part of the plenary to observe the proceedings.

He said: “We heard rumours that the lawmakers want to repudiate the laws they made. They want to approbate and reprobate. They made a law that local governments should serve for three years. We are lawmakers and not law breakers; we were elected same way they were elected. All elections are the same under the constitution. They have no power to dissolve us.”

Offor, who neither confirmed nor denied it, asked how the Chairmen got to know about the intention of the House when they were not spirits. He asked our correspondent to wait for further clarification.

Offor said: “How did they know what we want to do? Are they spirits?”

Asked if the lawmakers have the intention of sacking the chairmen and councillors, Offor said: “Wait until we finish”.

The governor also said Okorocha did not hand over documents detailing the financial dealings of his administration to him.

He, thereafter, ordered all Permanent Secretaries to submit documents in their care within 24 hours.

Ihedioha gave the order yesterday at the swearing in of Secretary to the State Government, Uche Onyeagocha, and Chief of Staff Chris Okewulonu, at the Government House.

Ekiti Assembly orders suspended council chairmen to refund N3.6b

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has directed the 16 suspended local government chairmen to refund N3.6 billion allegedly looted from the state treasury.

We gathered that the lawmakers, at their sitting yesterday, said the order was predicated on the report of a panel, which indicted the council chairmen of mismanaging the cash.

The order was made at the valedictory session of the Fifth Assembly. The Sixth Assembly will be inaugurated by Governor Kayode Fayemi on Thursday.

The Assembly, in a resolution, ordered the suspended chairmen to refund the N3.6 billion into the coffers of the state government and also recommended appropriate sanctions against them.

The resolution was parts of recommendations by the House Committee on Public Account in its report on the local government chairmen, which was adopted by the House.

The report of the panel, which was presented by the member representing Ikere Constituency 2, Mr. Sunday Akinniyi, indicted the suspended LG bosses of contract fraud, abuse of office and lack of accountability.

The former Speaker, Mr. Kola Oluwawole, representing Moba Constituency 1, pleaded for leniency on behalf of the suspended chairmen, but his plea was turned down by the majority of his colleagues.

Oluwawole, like the suspended council chairmen, are members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP members opposed the recommendation for the sanction, claiming that the screening was full of irregularities.

They were, however, overruled by the Speaker, Mr. Adeniran Alagbada, who claimed that the chairmen went too far in their actions.

Alagbada cited example of his council area, Ise/Orun, where over N300 million naira was set aside for the building of secretariat, but the contract was not executed.

Meanwhile, Chairmen and members of three commissions nominated by Governor Kayode Fayemi were screened and confirmed by the House.

The commissions are: House of Assembly Service Commission, Civil Service Commission and State Independent Electoral Commission.

All members of the House of Assembly commission headed by Chief Taiwo Olatubosun were only asked to take a bow and leave having served at one point or the other as members of the House.

The Assembly ratified Justice Jide Aladejana as the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission and former Head of Service, Mr. Bunmi Famosaya, as the chairman of the Civil Service Commission.

Other members of the commissions also sailed through, “having proven their high level of integrity and diligence to the House”
